An Electronic Logging Device (ELD) is a piece of hardware that records a commercial driver’s Record of Duty Status (RODS), replacing the traditional paper logbook. The device automatically records driving time, engine hours, vehicle movement, and location information, which can be used to determine compliance with federal hours-of-service (HOS) regulations.

Most commercial drivers who are currently required to keep paper records of duty status (RODS) are required to use an ELD. However, there are some exemptions based on certain vehicle types, the length of haul, and other factors.
