FAQ

An Electronic Logging Device (ELD) is a piece of hardware that records a commercial driver’s Record of Duty Status (RODS), replacing the traditional paper logbook. The device automatically records driving time, engine hours, vehicle movement, and location information, which can be used to determine compliance with federal hours-of-service (HOS) regulations.

Most commercial drivers who are currently required to keep paper records of duty status (RODS) are required to use an ELD. However, there are some exemptions based on certain vehicle types, the length of haul, and other factors.

Using an ELD can help improve compliance with federal hours-of-service regulations, reduce paperwork, and improve safety on the road by providing accurate and reliable data on driver behavior and vehicle performance.

ELDs that are compliant with FMCSA regulations will be listed on the FMCSA’s Registered ELDs webpage. You can also check the ELD manufacturer’s website for information about their device’s compliance.

If your ELD malfunctions, you must take immediate steps to repair or replace the device to ensure compliance with federal regulations. In the meantime, you may use paper logs for up to eight days or until the ELD is repaired or replaced.

If there is an error in your eLogBook, 1 Source ELD can help you edit it as necessary while ensuring compliance with federal regulations. We can assist you in making corrections and including an explanation for the edit, while ensuring the original entry remains visible.

Yes, driver data is secure with an ELD. ELDs are required to meet strict security standards, and the data collected is protected by encryption and other security measures.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require commercial drivers subject to the ELD mandate to use a registered and compliant ELD, keep accurate and up-to-date records of duty status, and comply with other regulations related to HOS and ELD use.
